On September 15, 2018, I found these purple-gilled laccaria (Cortinarius alboviolaceus) growing as a small group and also standing alone at the edge of a path at Beaver Brook Reservation in Hollis, NH. It one of my favorite mushrooms for its uniquely-colored gills hidden beneath a modest cement-gray cap. It’s a classic mushroom shape when young, but, as it ages, the cap flares at its edges to reveal its pretty purple-ochre gills.
